The story of our Spilanthes Acmella – our first full farm-to-face ingredient

A first look into something that has had me buzzing like a busy bee.

Part of the reason our full size Quaintrelle Revival Serum has taken a little longer to come to fruition and expanding on our ‘farm to face’ approach … is owing to these vibrant little buds from the plant Spilanthes Acmella, also known as the toothache plant or buzz buttons, and with good reason.

At Reset Beauty, in line with helping you to achieve optimum skin health, our mission is to encourage and inspire you to reconnect with the things that bring you joy – to reset. So one of my formulating goals for Quaintrelle, was to help relax facial tension – helping you to feel like someone had pushed your reset button, whether that’s after a long day or starting off the day feeling refreshed.

There are a number of carefully selected ingredients Quaintrelle that work towards this goal, including the pure essential oils used in the composition. But the more I researched into Spilanthes Acmella and the potential benefits, I knew its extract would be a standout ingredient in our in-house botanical complex used in the serum and achieving one of its goals.

So when the plant I had been researching and searching for, wasn’t readily available (cost-effective nor sustainable to import), I decided to try growing the plant myself. And how pleasantly surprised I’ve been. What’s more, there is complete control over quality of the plant and the cuttings – ensuring the entire process is chemical-free, handled & harvested with 100% care for the health of the plant and the cuttings, and optimum timing is achieved in regards to harvesting when the nutrients are at their fullest as well as putting the cuttings straight to use.

What started with three skinny stalks that looked to be on the brink of death when I received them, and was going to be a ‘see how it goes’ process, has now turned into an ongoing little harvest of healthy, vibrant, fresh cuttings that I’m trying to keep up with! It has completely exceeded expectations!

So why all the effort and desire to have these cute little buzz buttons in Quaintrelle? It all has to do with facial tension.

Traditionally the leaves and buds have been used to relieve pain from toothache among other things, with its chemical compounds said to provide an analgesic and anti-inflammatory effect. (Oh how I love showing off its effect to our visitors!)

More recently, studies have looked into the use of its extract and properties as a treatment to relax facial muscle tension, as well as help restructure, firm and smooth the skin, with compounding long-term benefits.

We encourage you to take this one step further when using Quaintrelle, which will amplify this potential, by following our Slow Beauty approach and apply Quaintrelle using a rejuvenating facial massage. If you’re not sure where to start, stay tuned and we will be sharing our well-ageing facial massage soon. You can also sign up to Reset Beauty if you want to know when the Quaintrelle Revival Serum launches.

And while we may not be a ‘farm’ (yet!), you can enjoy the benefits of farm-to-face ingredients through the raw botanicals we diligently source and use in our in-house botanical extracts, as well as our very own little harvest.
